The beach
The movie The Beach is an adventure film created in 2000 by director Danny Boyle. The movie is based on the novel The Beach created in 1996 by Alex Garland. John Hodge adapted the book for the 2000 film. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and features Tilda Swinton, Robert Carlyle, Virginie Ledoyen, Guillaume Canet, and Paterson Joseph. It was filmed on the Thai island “Koh Phi Phi.” The main character “Richard” played by Leonardo DiCaprio, is a college student in Thailand for the summer, who obtains a map to a mythical island. Upon arriving at the island after a treacherous journey will his allies Francoise and Etienne, life on the island appears to be great but is soon met with adversity and drama. Throughout this movie, Thailand is displayed in many ways. The “suburbs” of Thailand are shown in the beginning, followed by the country/island territory and inner city life of Thailand. During one scene, Richard has been living isolated in the jungle for some time now due to issues in the camp. He arrives at the fields where Thailand farmers are cultivating Marijuana as a cash crop. In this scene he sees a few of his friends from back in the city of Thailand die at the hands of the Thailand famers. Here we see the contradicting nature of the island. Upon arrival, the island was mystical and beautiful to the foreigners who wanted nothing but to have a good time. They later died at the hands of the farmers who appear evil in nature due to their need to protect their business at all cost. The foreigners obsession with this mystical place led to their demise in the end.
